Dining Out: What to Eat?
When continuing on your journey to health and wellness temptations will always be right around the corner. Dining out can be the trickiest and scariest thing for someone embarking on weight loss goals. Appetizers, huge dinner portions and the tempting deserts at the end of the meal, when paired with a few cocktails or beers and the average person can be staring at a few days worth of calories in this one meal. High in calories, fat and sodium this one wrong meal can set your goals back an entire week or more, so how do we avoid it?
Obviously the best way to avoid these high calorie, fat laden and sodium filled meals is to completely avoid them by not going out to eat and choosing to make your own meals at home. When making your own meals you are in complete control of what is put in it and how it is cooked, something that you can never be sure of when dining out at a restaurant. But we can't be naive in thinking we will never go out to eat again and just stay at home away from temptations all together. So when we do go out we need to be armed with the knowledge we need to stay the course.
An easy way to keep your diet in check is to go to a restaurant with healthier light options for dinner. A lot of chain restaurants are getting into the habit of adding these options to their menus for the health conscious people to choose from. These options unfortunately are not nearly as extensive as the rest of the menu, but the choices are there none the less. A few restaurants that have options are Applebees Under 550 Calorie menu nd Weight Watchers menu, Chili's Guiltless Grill, Red Lobster Light House menu and T.G.I. Fridays Right Portion Right Price menu.
Even those of us who know what the better options are and what to avoid when choosing a menu item can get tricked sometimes. For instance at Ruby Tuesdays Turkey Burger, which many dieters would see as one of the best options on the menu, contains an astounding 1,145 calories, 71 grams of fat and 56 grams of carbs. So unless its in the "healthy" menu section with listed calories and fat content then you can't trust that its a good option. An easy adjustments when ordering is to cut your portion in half by boxing up half of the dinner BEFORE you even start to eat. This removes the temptation right away and keeps you eating the right sized portion meal. Other easy fixes are to eat a salad before you main course (with a light vinaigrette or oil and vinegar are your best dressings), to fill up on fiber to cut down on your meal, choose grilled over fried, choose whole wheat/brown rice over white pasta or rice, choose broth based soups over creamy soups and skip out on dessert! With these easy fixes you can go out and enjoy yourself with friends or family and still stay on track with your health goals.

Sleep Your Way to Good Health
The importance of sleep is often overlooked by so many in the midst of these busy, hectic lives we lead. Work, kids, household chores and everything else take first priority and sleep gets put on the back burner. Yet everyone feels the effects from lack of sleep in their everyday life, so why are so few of us actually making an effort to get those 8 hours of sleep every night?
Lack of sleep obviously leaves you feeling drained all day long and reaching for that morning coffee, or energy drink that gives you a quick boost and then drops you back down again. So many people wake up and MUST have that drink in their system or they can't start their day off on the right foot, something 8 hours of sleep can cure right away.
Other than being tired, which is fairly obvious, what else can lack of sleep do to our bodies? Studies have shown that people getting considerably less sleep (5.5 hours per night) lose and average of 1.3 pounds of fat in their weight loss goals. Where as people who got more sleep (8.5) hours lost 3.3 pounds of fat. The biggest difference being that 75% of the weight lost by the people with less sleep was muscle.
Lack of sleep can also do significant damage to the body's metabolism (which burns fat). Lack of sleep can decrease the body's calorie expenditure and in turn drastically slow down your metabolism. In addition to our bodies metabolism being slowed down due to the decreased calorie expenditure there is another biological reason sleep affects our weight loss. Cortisol levels in the body increase as a result of sleep deprivation and as a result even further slow down metabolism. Have you ever woken up after a short nights sleep and felt hungrier then ever? So you eat a big breakfast only to feel just as hungry later in the day? That's because sleep deprivation increases appetite which has obvious importance in your wellness plan.
We all know the importance of staying active for a healthy lifestyle, but how many of us feel like getting to the gym early in the morning after 6 hours of sleep? Or going after work after being drained from the everyday grind on that same nights sleep? Not many. Not having the energy to get to the gym is going to be a challenge if day after day your not fully rested. For those days when you do get to the gym, sleeping is when your body recovers from exercise and recharges for the next day.
7.5-9 hours per day is recommended for the average adult. The National Sleep Foundation reports that 40 million adults suffer from 70 different sleep disorders, and 60% of adults report having sleep problems 2x per week or more. That's a lot of stressed out people sabotaging themselves on their way to a successful and healthy wellness plan, so get some sleep!

New Year Resolution
It's that time of the year again, new year means new resolutions. Losing weight, getting healthy and working out top the list of resolutions year after year, but how many people actually stick to this resolutions? Well a number of studies have been done showing that 45% of adults make at least one resolution every year of those 25% don't even make it through their first week, 35% don't last the month and 6 months in 50% of those resolutions are gone and forgotten.
So why do people time and time again fail to follow through with their goals? One thing that comes to mind is the simple aspect of putting off your health and wellness routine. We all know that person, or maybe we are that person who starts their diet and exercise regime every week. As the weekend rolls around they make that statement "Monday I start losing weight, exercising, etc" but then by mid week, maybe even on Monday that dream is gone. Putting off your health for after the weekend, or for the new year is starting your whole routine off on the wrong foot.
Why does waiting that extra 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 months to start make any difference in your resolution for a new you? Why not start right away? By putting it off and not starting right away your instilling in yourself a bad habit of putting your routine on hold when something comes up that may be a challenge for your new lifestyle. There is always something coming up to deter your goals and making excuses to start after they're over is not realistic. All of the holidays clumped together in the fall and winter (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years) makes it an easy excuse to start after. But what about birthday parties, summer BBQs (Memorial Day, 4th of July), Easter, etc? There is always another holiday or celebration right around the corner that can be an excuse to break or put off your wellness goals. And if you are one of those people who put it off chances are you won't be able to make it through all those tough times. So start today and stick to it no matter what.
Here's to a healthy happy new year and a healthy happy new you.
